What it is
Withania somnifera is a solanaceous shrub whose root is the plant part specified in most commercial ashwagandha trade. Extract manufacture involves hydroalcoholic or water extraction of the milled dried root, concentration of the liquor, and drying to a powder either natively or onto a carrier such as maltodextrin. The analytical anchor is the withanolide group, a family of steroidal lactones that serve as the marker compounds for standardisation.
Formulation considerations
Grade selection matters more here than with most botanicals, because the same trade name covers quite different materials. A 2.5% HPLC figure and a 2.5% gravimetric figure describe different things, and root-only material differs from root-and-leaf blends in both withanolide profile and regulatory treatment. Buyers should fix the plant part, the assay method and the target percentage in the purchase specification rather than relying on the commercial descriptor alone.
Physically the powder behaves well. It flows adequately for direct capsule filling, compresses acceptably with standard binders, and tolerates normal tabletting pressures. Moisture is the main process risk: the material picks up humidity and loses flow, which shows up as bridging in hopper feeds.
Applications
Capsules and tablets remain the dominant formats. Powder sticks, functional drink mixes and gummy bases also take the material readily, with taste the limiting variable in anything consumed without a shell. For gummies, the carrier type should be checked against your gelling system, since some carriers interact with pectin set behaviour.
Applications
- Capsules and tablets
- Powder sticks and sachets
- Ready-to-mix powder blends
- Gummies and chewables
Handling and storage
Keep sealed in a dry environment below 25 degrees Celsius and away from direct sunlight. The powder is moderately hygroscopic and will cake if left open in humid conditions, so resealing after part use and keeping the liner closed are important for flow retention. Typical shelf life is 24 to 36 months from manufacture depending on grade. Decant in a low-humidity area and avoid repeated warm and cool cycling, which drives moisture migration inside the drum.
Common questions
What withanolide percentage is available?
We supply 2.5% and 5.0% total withanolide grades, assayed by HPLC. Each lot Certificate of Analysis states the measured value and the analytical method used, since gravimetric and HPLC figures are not interchangeable.
Is this a root-only extract or does it include leaf?
The standard specification is root only, and the plant part is stated on both the specification sheet and the Certificate of Analysis. Root-and-leaf material carries a different withanolide profile and is quoted separately.
How does ashwagandha extract taste in an open powder format?
It is bitter with an earthy, slightly astringent character that becomes noticeable above roughly 300 mg per serve in an unflavoured base. Masking with a strong flavour system, or moving to a capsule or coated tablet, is the usual route for higher inclusion rates.
What is the typical inclusion rate?
Inclusion depends entirely on the finished format and the withanolide target. We can advise on dosing ranges against your specification, and material is available in bulk quantities, with pricing on application.
