Beta-Alanine

Beta-alanine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid in which the amino group sits on the beta rather than the alpha carbon. It is manufactured synthetically and purified by crystallisation to yield a white, highly water-soluble powder with a mildly sweet-saline taste. In sports nutrition it is dosed at 1.6 to 3.2 g per serve, and the main formulation question is not solubility but how to manage the transient skin-tingling sensation that users associate with the ingredient.

What it is

Unlike the twenty amino acids that build proteins, beta-alanine has its amino group on the carbon one position further along the chain, so it is not incorporated into polypeptides. Commercial material is made by chemical synthesis, most often via the ammonolysis of acrylic acid derivatives or the hydrolysis of a nitrile intermediate, followed by crystallisation and drying. Purity control focuses on residual chloride, sulphate and heavy metals, with assay confirmed by titration.

Formulation considerations

The ingredient is unusually easy to work with in physical terms: it dissolves rapidly and completely, holds assay across the acidic pH of flavoured sports drinks, and survives spray-drying and granulation without decomposition. The complications are sensory. Beta-alanine contributes a faintly salty-sweet note that becomes noticeable above roughly 2 g per serve and can flatten fruit flavour systems, so flavour trials should run at the final dose. Hygroscopicity is the other practical point, since even brief exposure in a humid room can cause the powder to clump and bridge in hoppers. Where the formulation must avoid the tingling response, a coated grade changes dissolution behaviour and will need its own blending and compression assessment.

Applications

Beta-alanine appears in pre-workout powders, endurance and intra-workout drinks, capsules and tablets, effervescent sticks, and multi-ingredient performance blends alongside creatine and citrulline. Standard and sustained-release grades are available in bulk quantities, with pricing on application.

Applications

  • Pre-workout powders
  • Endurance and intra-workout formulations
  • Capsules and tablets
  • Sustained-release blends
  • Amino acid stick packs
  • Effervescent drink mixes

Handling and storage

Store in sealed original packaging below 25°C in a dry area with relative humidity under 60%. Typical shelf life is 36 months unopened. The powder is hygroscopic and will take up atmospheric moisture during open weighing, so keep exposure brief and reseal liners. It is chemically stable in dry blends and tolerates a wide pH range in solution.

Common questions

What causes the tingling sensation associated with beta-alanine?

The sensation is paraesthesia, a transient and harmless nerve response reported at higher single doses. Formulators manage it by splitting the daily amount across servings or by using a sustained-release coated grade that slows dissolution.

Is a sustained-release grade of beta-alanine available?

Yes. Coated or matrix-embedded grades release more slowly and are specified where the tingling sensation would be undesirable, for example in capsule products taken outside a training context. Dose equivalence and dissolution data should be reviewed before substituting.

How soluble is beta-alanine?

It is freely soluble, dissolving at well over 500 g per litre at room temperature, so concentration is rarely a constraint in either powders or liquids. It is also stable across the pH range used in flavoured sports drinks.

What documentation is supplied with each lot?

A Certificate of Analysis covering assay, loss on drying, residue on ignition and heavy metals is issued for each lot, together with the Technical Data Sheet and Safety Data Sheet.
