Coenzyme Q10 (Ubiquinone)

Coenzyme Q10 is a lipid-soluble benzoquinone supplied commercially as the oxidised ubiquinone form, manufactured by yeast fermentation to give material that is all-trans in configuration, matching the isomer found in biological systems. The neat crystalline powder is practically insoluble in water and melts in the high forties Celsius, which places real constraints on both processing temperature and format choice. Water-dispersible and oil-dispersion grades exist specifically to work around those constraints.

What it is

Coenzyme Q10 belongs to the ubiquinone family, a benzoquinone ring carrying a long isoprenoid tail that makes the molecule strongly lipophilic. Commercial manufacture is by fermentation, which delivers the all-trans isomer directly rather than the mixture that synthetic routes can produce. The finished crystalline powder is a vivid yellow-orange and assays at 98% or better by HPLC.

Formulation considerations

Three physical facts shape every decision. The material is practically insoluble in water. It is light sensitive. And it melts at a temperature that ordinary warehousing and transport can reach in an Australian summer. Each has a straightforward engineering answer, but none can be ignored.

Water insolubility sends neat crystalline grades toward softgels, oil suspensions and solid dose, while anything aqueous requires a water-dispersible grade built on a carrier matrix. Light sensitivity means opaque or amber primary packaging for finished product. The low melting point means that the supply chain, not just the factory, needs temperature awareness: a drum that has partially melted and resolidified may still meet assay while behaving quite differently on a filling line.

In oil suspension, coenzyme Q10 dissolves readily in warmed carrier oils, but formulators should keep hold temperatures modest and verify that the active stays in solution rather than recrystallising on cooling.

Applications

Softgels and oil suspensions remain the dominant format and suit the solubility profile best. Tablets and hard capsules use the crystalline powder directly. Beverages, sachets and gummies rely on water-dispersible grades, and cosmetic emulsions place the material in the oil phase. Available in bulk quantities, with pricing on application.

Applications

  • Softgels and oil suspensions
  • Tablets and hard capsules
  • Water-dispersible beverage and sachet formats
  • Topical and cosmetic emulsions

Handling and storage

Store sealed below 25 degrees Celsius, protected from light, in the original container. Coenzyme Q10 is light sensitive and will darken on prolonged exposure, and because the crystalline material melts between 48 and 52 degrees Celsius it must not be held near heat sources or allowed to sit in a warm vehicle or roof-space store. Typical shelf life is 36 months from manufacture in unopened, light-protected packaging. Where the material has been through a melt cycle, recrystallisation behaviour and particle size can change even though assay remains within specification.

Common questions

Is your CoQ10 ubiquinone or ubiquinol?

The standard grade is ubiquinone, the oxidised and considerably more stable form, produced by yeast fermentation in the all-trans configuration. Ubiquinol requires different handling and packaging because of its oxidative sensitivity and is quoted separately.

Why does CoQ10 need a dispersible grade for beverages?

Neat crystalline coenzyme Q10 is practically insoluble in water and will simply settle out of an aqueous system. Water-dispersible grades carry the active on a matrix that allows it to disperse and stay suspended, which is what makes beverage and sachet formats practical.

What temperature limits apply during processing?

The crystalline material melts between 48 and 52 degrees Celsius, so processing, storage and transport should stay comfortably below that. A melt and resolidify cycle can alter particle morphology and flow even when the assay figure is unchanged.

Does CoQ10 need protection from light?

Yes. The material darkens with sustained light exposure, so it is packed in light-protective containers and finished products are normally presented in opaque or amber packaging.
