Omega-3 Fish Oil Powder

Omega-3 fish oil powder is produced by emulsifying refined fish oil with a wall material such as modified starch, maltodextrin or a protein system, then spray drying to form discrete microcapsules that hold the oil phase inside a dry matrix. Typical oil loads run from 10% to 60%, with EPA and DHA declared in milligrams per gram of powder rather than as a percentage of the oil. The encapsulation wall is what makes the material usable in dry formats: it limits oxygen contact, suppresses the oil's odour and converts a liquid into a weighable, blendable powder.

What it is

Converting fish oil into a powder is an encapsulation problem rather than a drying problem. The oil is emulsified into a solution of the wall material, the emulsion is homogenised to a fine, stable droplet size, and spray drying then locks each droplet inside a dried matrix shell. The resulting particle is mostly oil by weight in high-load grades, yet behaves as a dry solid on plant equipment.

Formulation considerations

Two sets of numbers matter. The first is composition: EPA and DHA content, declared per gram of powder so that dosing calculations do not have to pass through an assumed oil load. The second is oxidative state, described by peroxide value for primary oxidation, p-anisidine value for secondary oxidation products, and TOTOX as the combined index. A low peroxide value on its own can mask an oil that has already moved past the primary stage.

Process handling then determines whether the incoming specification survives into finished product. The wall is the only barrier between the oil and the atmosphere, so anything that breaches it, high shear, aggressive compression, moisture pickup, erodes shelf life. Oxygen management in the finished pack, including nitrogen flushing and barrier films, is usually the deciding factor in stability trials.

Applications

Dry powder blends, sachets and nutritional powders are the natural fit. Tablets and capsules are routine with moderated compression. Bars and other dry food formats use the material where a liquid oil would be impractical. Available in bulk quantities, with pricing on application.

Handling and storage

Store sealed below 20 degrees Celsius in a dry area away from light, heat and oxygen. The encapsulation wall provides meaningful but not indefinite protection, so part-used packs should be resealed immediately and ideally nitrogen flushed. Avoid holding the powder in open hoppers, and keep blending and compression times short since mechanical shear can rupture capsules and release oil. Typical shelf life is 18 to 24 months in unopened, nitrogen-flushed packaging. Do not freeze and thaw repeatedly, as moisture migration compromises wall integrity.

Common questions

How much EPA and DHA does the powder contain per gram?

A 50% to 60% oil load grade typically delivers 100 mg/g EPA and 70 mg/g DHA as a minimum, with total omega-3 at 180 mg/g or above. The measured values appear on each lot Certificate of Analysis, since declaring per gram of powder rather than per gram of oil avoids miscalculation in dosing.

What oxidation values should I specify?

Peroxide value, p-anisidine value and the combined TOTOX figure together describe oxidative state. Specifying all three, with limits of roughly 5 meq/kg, 20 and 26 respectively, gives a far clearer picture than peroxide value alone, which only reflects primary oxidation.

Will the powder cause off-odours in a finished blend?

The microencapsulation wall substantially reduces fishy odour and taste in the dry state. Odour development in finished product generally traces back to ruptured capsules from excessive shear or compression force, moisture ingress, or oxygen exposure during storage, rather than to the incoming material.

Can the powder be used in tablets?

Yes, with attention to compression force. Excessive pressure fractures the capsule wall and releases free oil, which affects both odour and oxidative stability. Direct compression at moderate force with a suitable binder system is the usual approach.
