What it is
Cholecalciferol forms when ultraviolet light opens the B-ring of 7-dehydrocholesterol. Commercially, the precursor is isolated from lanolin, irradiated under controlled conditions, then purified and crystallised to a resin. For most buyers that resin is not the useful article. It is dissolved, emulsified with a carrier such as modified food starch or gelatin together with an antioxidant, and spray dried into beadlets or powder standardised to a declared international unit potency.
Formulation considerations
Potency management governs everything. The matrix protects the active, but it does not make it indestructible: heat during tabletting or extrusion, acidity in a gummy base, oxygen in a poorly sealed container and trace iron or copper in a mineral premix all take their toll. Direct contact with uncoated ferrous salts or ascorbic acid in a premix is a known source of loss and is usually managed by coating one or both components. Dispersion in dry blends is good given the particle size and bulk density, though the low inclusion rate means a stepwise pre-blend with a compatible diluent is the reliable way to achieve uniformity. For oil-filled softgels, an oil dilution rather than a powder is the appropriate form.
Applications
The powder is used in tablets, capsules and chewables, vitamin and mineral premixes, dairy and plant-beverage fortification, milk powders, infant and clinical nutrition, gummies, and cereal and bakery fortification. Available in bulk quantities, with pricing on application.

Handling and storage
Store in sealed original packaging below 15°C where possible, in a dry, dark area, and refrigerate opened containers. Typical shelf life is 24 months unopened under these conditions. Cholecalciferol is degraded by oxygen, light, heat, acid and trace metals, so minimise open exposure, purge headspace in subdivided containers and confirm overage requirements against process and shelf-life data.
Common questions
What potency grades of vitamin D3 are available?
The standard trade article is a 100,000 IU per gram spray-dried powder. Higher-potency powders, oil dilutions and crystalline resin at around 40,000,000 IU per gram are also available where the dosage form calls for them.
Why is vitamin D3 supplied in a spray-dried matrix rather than neat?
The pure material is an oil-soluble resin that oxidises readily and cannot be dry blended accurately at microgram dose levels. Encapsulating it in a starch or gelatin matrix with an antioxidant makes it a free-flowing powder that disperses evenly in a premix and survives processing far better.
Is a plant-sourced vitamin D3 available?
Yes. Cholecalciferol derived from a non-animal precursor, typically lichen, can be supplied where a vegan-positioned product is required. Potency is usually lower per gram and lead times are longer, so specify this at the enquiry stage.
How much overage should be allowed in a formulation?
That depends on the process, the dosage form and the target shelf life, and must be established by the brand owner's own stability work. The powder's labelled potency is confirmed on the lot Certificate of Analysis at the time of release.
